Chocking Of Jack-Up Rigs For Dry Tow

Dry-tow transport of a jack-up rig overseas, without damage? Allrig has invented a method.

The problem with jack-up rigs is that due to natural clearance between the legs and their guides, the movement of the ship creates the risk that the legs move back and forth on the guides. This can result in damage to the jack housing, legs or even worse the rig construction. The chocking plates, which are to be placed between each chord and guide, do not fit properly. As a result the legs cannot be correctly secured by the chocking plates and additional measures are necessary to prevent damage during dry-transport. For this we’ve invented a method where we pour an epoxy between the leg chords and the guides, which will stop the movement.

Allrig was appointed to chock the legs of the jack-up rig the ‘Key Hawaï’ – Shelf Drilling, to make ready for dry tow transport to Bahrein. Besides Shelf Drilling, Transocean, Northern Offshore, Noble and other companies have used this proven method.

Allrigs’s chocking team

Our chocking team consists of about fourteen professionals, the only local labour hired are the scaffolding builders. We need about two to three days of preparation time for the chocking project, but we can do this concurrent with other activities on the rig so no time is being lost. After the rig is loaded on the heavy transport vessel we need about three to four days to chock all the legs, this includes the curing time.
